Haikou Meilan International Airport (IATA: HAK, ICAO: ZJHK) serves as the primary aviation gateway to Haikou, the vibrant capital of China’s southernmost island province, Hainan. Located roughly 25 kilometers southeast of the city center, the airport has grown from a regional transit stop into a major international aviation hub, playing a critical role in connecting the Hainan Free Trade Port to the rest of the world.
History and Evolution
Opened in May 1999 to replace the landlocked and congested Dayingshan Airport, Meilan Airport immediately provided Haikou with modern, scalable infrastructure. Over the decades, continuous expansions transformed its footprint.
The most defining milestone in its recent history was the opening of its Phase II expansion project, headlined by the massive Terminal 2, which officially commenced operations in late 2021. This expansion added a second parallel runway capable of handling giant aircraft like the Airbus A380, significantly boosting the airport’s capacity to tens of millions of passengers annually.
Terminal Architecture and Layout
Meilan Airport operates two primary terminal buildings—Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2)—situated opposite each other and connected by efficient transport options:
- Terminal 1: Built in a distinct U-shape, T1 primarily handles domestic flights (excluding operations by select major partners) and is known for its efficient, traveler-friendly layout.
- Terminal 2: Designed as a modern, sprawling H-shape structure, T2 handles international flights alongside domestic routes for major carriers like Hainan Airlines and China Southern Airlines. T2 boasts state-of-the-art architecture incorporating smart technologies, abundant natural light, duty-free shopping areas, and seamless customs facilities.
Seamless Connectivity
One of Meilan Airport’s standout features is its integrated transportation hub. Rather than just relying on roads, the airport complex is directly linked to the Hainan Island High-speed Rail via the underground Meilan Station. Passengers can step off a flight and walk straight onto a high-speed train, making it remarkably easy to travel directly to other major cities and coastal destinations across Hainan Island. Additionally, regular airport buses, local taxis, and urban road networks link the facility to downtown Haikou in roughly 30 minutes.
Gateway to a Free Trade Zone
As Hainan continues to develop as a major global free-trade port, Meilan International Airport acts as a crucial economic engine. It supports liberalized aviation policies, including extensive visa-free entry programs for eligible international travelers, positioning itself not just as a transit hub, but as the welcoming front door to a tropical island destination.
