Montagem Meaning in Phonk: The Evolution of a Brazilian Funk Staple in the Underground Bass Scene

If you have spent any time scrolling through TikTok, Instagram Reels, or underground music streaming channels like YouTube over the last few years, you have undoubtedly encountered Phonk—specifically, the aggressive, distorted, high-tempo subgenres that dominate modern meme culture and gym playlists.

If you look closely at the track titles of these viral hits, you will notice a recurring word: Montagem.

Far from being just a random aesthetic buzzword, montagem is a specific production technique with deep roots in Brazilian music history that has been re-engineered for the global electronic underground.

What Does “Montagem” Actually Mean?

In Portuguese, the word montagem literally translates to “assembly,” “mounting,” “editing,” or “montage.”

In the context of music production, a montagem is a collage or a constructed mix. It refers to a track built by cutting, splicing, layering, and rearranging vocal samples, drum breaks, and basslines from various different sources into a brand-new, cohesive, high-energy composition.

While the term can apply to various forms of audio collage, in modern internet music culture, it has become synonymous with a specific sound: phonk tracks that heavily sample Brazilian Funk (Funk Carioca).

The Origin: Brazilian Funk Roots

To understand montagem in phonk, you first have to look at its birthplace: Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Brazilian funk producers (known as DJ’s de funk) pioneered a style of mixing where they took acapellas from older soul, hip-hop, or dance tracks, sped them up, and fused them with heavy, syncopated electronic percussion loops (most notably the legendary Tamborzão beat).

These tracks were called montagems because the producers were literally assembling different audio pieces together live on mixing boards or early digital audio workstations (DAWs). They were designed for bailes funk (funk street parties)—raw, hypnotic, and engineered to make crowds move.

The Intersection: How Montagem Entered Phonk

Phonk itself originated in the mid-2010s as a revival of 1990s Memphis rap, characterized by dark, lo-fi aesthetics, chopped-and-screwed vocals, and dusty cowbells. For years, the scene was dominated by American producers like SpaceGhostPurrp, DJ Smokey, and later, the wave of drift phonk producers.

However, music production on the internet is borderless. Around 2021 to 2023, bedroom producers from Russia, South America, and across the globe began experimenting by blending the aggressive Memphis rap aesthetic with the high-energy percussion and vocal chanting style of Brazilian Funk.

This hybrid birthed sounds often referred to as Funk Phonk, Brazil Phonk, or simply Montagem Phonk.
